84: Letting Go Of The Shame of Anxiety (Life Update From Mandy)

According to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, “Anxiety is a normal emotion that comes and goes in response to fears or worries about changes in health, work, relationships, or money. A person is said to have an anxiety disorder if the anxiety does not go away, gets worse over time, and prevents a person from participating in daily activities.” It affects nearly 40 million adults in the United States alone. If you’ve struggled with anxiety, I want you to know that you’re not alone. Me too. In today’s episode, I want to encourage you and help you get rid of the shame of anxiety by sharing my story with you. I’ll share a recent personal story about anxiety, as well as the natural and medical help I used to overcome it. Grab your coffee and let’s spend some time together – in my car as I drive, actually.

Quotes about letting go of the shame of anxiety:

Sometimes the chemical things happening in your body make it impossible to overcome anxiety without some medical intervention. If you have struggled with anxiety at all, I want to give you permission that it is okay if you need some medical intervention.

~Mandy B. Anderson, She Who Overcomes™ Podcast episode 84

I am sorry that there may have been people that have put this pressure on you that you need to faith your way out of medicine; that you have to positively think your way out of anxiety and depression. That is wrong on so many levels. It is not okay that you have felt that pressure or been pressured in that way, but I want to give you permission to embrace where you are at. Embrace the fact that sometimes your body just needs some medicine. And that’s okay.

~Mandy B. Anderson, She Who Overcomes™ Podcast episode 84

We’ve got to let go of the shame of anxiety. There is no shame in needing medical intervention. Your life is worth it.

79: Debunking the Myths of Financial Planning with Adam Lucas

“90% of financial planning is building habits.” These are the wise words of my friend, Adam Lucas. We met via LinkedIn and thought a podcast episode about the myths of financial planning would be a great resource to you! Adam is a Financial Advisor with Northwestern Mutual in Denver, Colorado. Adam and his wife, Emily, have a unique view of financial planning due to Emily having cystic fibrosis. This conversation is full of encouragement, tips, and truth about what it takes to gain control of your finances and build for your future.

3 Myths of Financial Planning (by Adam Lucas)

  • Myth #1: Financial planning is only for the wealthy. Truth: Wealth management isn’t the sole province of the rich. Even if you’re just starting your career, you’re still building wealth.
  • Myth #2: DIYers don’t pay fees, so they come out ahead. Truth: Not always the case! A Financial Advisor can help coach you on your financial goals and how to reach them.
  • Myth #3: Financial planning only means helping with investing. Truth: The end game of financial planning is to balance your dreams with your financial obligations and everyday expenses – while making sure you’re enjoying life at the same time.

Connect with Adam Lucas:

Adam Lucas, a Colorado native, joined Northwestern Mutual in 2019. He lives in Denver with his wife, Emily, along with their cat, Morris, and two dogs – Peyton and Surrey.

Because of his personal experiences with cystic fibrosis within his own family, Adam has built his financial advising practice around helping create holistic financial plans that are tailored to a client’s specific goals. Adam’s wife, Emily, was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis as a baby. Emily’s younger sister, Jessica, passed away from complications due to CF in 2014 at the age of 21. As a result, Adam & Emily have put an emphasis in their own lives on creating a balance between enjoying life today and creating habits to save for their future. His goal is to help his clients do the same – to spend life living.

Outside of his career, Adam is addicted to golf, and has fallen victim to the idea that he’ll someday have a consistently good swing. He & Emily enjoy travelling, exploring Colorado’s outdoors, and attending Colorado Avalanche & CU Buffs games. Adam & Emily stay involved with their local Cystic Fibrosis Foundation chapter, and participate in several fundraising & networking events throughout the year.

64: Finding Hope in Failure {Day 30 of 30 Days of Dangerous Hope}

64: Finding Hope in Failure

How do you typically handle it when you fail to meet your goal? I want to share with you how to find some hope in your failures. In true Mandy-fashion, I’m going to use my own recent failure as an example. Grab your coffee and listen in as I share a heartfelt message about finding hope in failure.

This episode is the final day of the 30 Days of Dangerous Hope Campaign. Read all 30 days here.

Be willing to face your failures. You just might find that the let downs and disappointments from them are less than the growth!

~Mandy B. Anderson

Finding Hope in Failure Coaching Exercise:

Finding hope in your failure requires you to journal it out. Let’s do it together! Take out a pen and paper and draw a vertical line down the center of the page. At the top of the page, write down a recent goal that you failed to meet. Write a column on the left hand side of the vertical line titled “Let downs of this experience.” On the right hand side write a column titled “What I learned or new experiences I am proud of.” Then, set a timer for 5-10 minutes and jot down everything you can think of on both sides!

We have to be willing to look at our failures. It’s only when we do, that we can grow in wisdom, strength, and skill.

~Mandy B. Anderson
